Puerto del Carmen is the largest and oldest resort on the Canary Island of Lanzarote. Which has long been a favourite holiday hot spot with travellers from across Europe. As this delightful destination is home to some fantastic beaches, excellent nightlife and an abundance of good value accommodation.

Tourists have been visiting Lanzarote ever since package holidays first started to be marketed here back in the early 1970´s. And at the time this small volcanic island in the Atlantic Ocean was regarded as a novel and new holiday option. Before going on to be tagged – unfairly - as Lanzagrotty by the Monty Python comic Michael Palin during the 1980´s.

But the island has never really been synonomous with the sort of 18-30 tourism of other Spanish islands and is actually still a very unspoiled destination. With no high rise hotels or apartment complexes to ruin the views. Now the island has totally shrugged off that image and attracts well heeled holidaymakers from all over Europe. Proving especially popular in the UK, Germany and Eire – which are Lanzarote´s three largest markets.

Conversely – getting to Lanzarote and booking accommodation on the island has never been cheaper. As Ryanair started operating flight services during November for the first time. Whilst other low cost airlines such as Monarch, easyJet and Thomas Cook all offering flights at reasonable prices.

Holiday accommodation is much cheaper here than elsewhere in Spain too.

With villas in Lanzarote available at far lower rates than on other islands such as Mallorca and Ibiza. In part this reflects the fact that Lanzarote has a year round rental season. But either way it still means that it is far cheaper to enjoy a holiday here than in say the Balearics. And the island can also be enjoyed during the winter months.

Puerto del Carmen is the resort to head for if you are looking for nightlife as well as lazy days on the beach. As there are hundreds of restaurants here – as well as a decent selection of lounge bars and clubs. Such as 928 and The Bank. Whilst the resort is home to the majestic sweep of sand called Playa Grande – which is one of the most attractive beaches on the island.

All of the action is concentrated on the Avenida de las Playas – which is the main coastal road running through the resort. And tourists on a budget will also find a good selection of holiday apartments in Lanzarote for rent here too. As this is where the bulk of complexes are concentrated.

For something a little different this year, why not visit a sporting event whilst on your holidays? There are so many different sports to choose from and some take place in very exotic locations, so you won’t miss out if you are looking for sun, sea and sand! Some sporting events, such as MotoGP and Formula 1 run a series of racing events which take place all over the world, so you could book your holiday to coincide with the race you want to see and travel to watch it live in between all that relaxation. Every sport has it’s heroes and no doubt you will have your own favourite, so just think how fun it would be to actually see them excelling in their sport.

Live MotoGP

There is nothing like watching sport live at the actual venue, it doesn’t matter what the sport is, it is so much better to see it ‘in the flesh.’ When you attend, you get the whole atmosphere, all the sights, sounds and smells, and, you can actually feel that buzz of excitement rippling through the crowds. With MotoGP, you can have tickets that allow you access to see what goes on behind the scenes and of course you will get to watch all the warm up and qualifying rounds. This will give you a taste of things to come and let you see who is in good form and who will be in poll position for the actual race. The race itself will be an event never to be forgotten and you will be there to see all the action up close and personal. Often there are races of a lower calibre before the main event and these can be very exciting and entertaining. You can see the racers of the future honing their skills and learning their trade.

Paddock Watching

Round the paddock there is plenty to see, including the teams who work behind the scenes on the bikes. It is fascinating to watch them at work as they really do work as a team and each person has his own job and knows exactly what to do and when so that the bike is back on the track as fast as possible. The smell of engines and rubber is very distinctive and nothing can prepare you for the noise, it is deafening but there is something so very exciting about the roar of the engines and it really does get your blood pumping. The speed is incredible and of course any accidents are fraught with danger and of course the danger is part of the appeal. Read the rest of this entry »
